Facts:
- Seaweeds are the plants of the sea
- There are 3 main groups of seaweeds, the reds, greens and browns. There are hundreds of different types of seaweed at Wembury
- Seaweed uses sunlight to photosynthesise and make energy to grow. They release oxygen as part of this process
- The dead seaweed that washes up on the beach is important too, it provides a home for flies and sand hoppers which are essential food for birds and acts like a marine compost heap, releasing nutrients back into the sea
- The seaweed in our tanks provides important food and shelter for the other creatures
