Moon Jellyfish

Scientific name: Aurelia aurita
Size: Up to 25cm diameter
Description: Colourless bell with 4 horseshoe-shapes when viewed from above
Habitat: Found throughout British and Irish waters
Facts:

  • Aurelia aurita is also known as the common jellyfish due to its local abundance.
  • They feed on a diet on mostly plankton.
  • Their sting does not affect humans, so no need to worry if you see them in the water!
  • Jellyfish are made up of about 95% water, compared to us humans that are 60% water.
