Edible Periwinkle

Scientific name:  Littorina littorea
Size: Up to 3cm across the shell
Colour: Grey or brown shell
Habitat: Rocky shores, on the surface of rocks
Facts:

  • Their shells are shaped like those of land snails.
  • They eat small plants by scraping them off the rock, while crawling across it.
  • They are extremely common on rocky shores and are also found in muddy estuaries.
  • Their larvae drifts with the plankton.
