Project Description

Common Limpet

Scientific name: Patella vulgata
Size: Up to 5cm across
Colour: Off-white, grey, shades of yellow/cream
Habitat: Rocky shores, almost anywhere
Facts:

  • Their teeth are made from the strongest known natural material, and they use them to scrape algae off the rock.
  • By grinding their shell against the rock they make a special home, where they go at low tide and fit tightly to stop them drying out; if you kick them off the rock they may die.
  • They find their way back home by following a special slime trail.
  • Limpets sometimes fight by trying to lever each other off the rock, using the edge of their shell like a wedge.
