Wembury is a great place to learn! For more information about visits and resources, see below
Wembury Marine Centre offers the following programmes of work for schools (and other interested groups). The Marine Centre is open between April and September and we mainly offer our school services between these months but please get in touch if you are interested in booking a visit in the winter months.
Work can be tailored to any age group in both Primary and Secondary schools and to Home Education groups.
Activities based at the beach:
Guided rockpooling tours looking at habitats, food chains and adaptations (we can tailor this to your focus topics).
Assistance with rocky shore surveys with transects and quadrats (we would need you to provide all the equipment required).
Either of the above can include a timed search for climate change indicator species (we can tailor this to your focus topics).
We also offer a guided beach clean and litter survey activity which will generate data to take back to the classroom if needed.
Beach art and craft workshops can also be arranged depending on number of pupils.
We charge £1/pupil (as of 1st April 2010) for the above services. We require a minimum group size of 10 pupils and the maximum we can work with in one day is 90 pupils.
We will consider other requests for activities but these will be subject to available staff and volunteer time.
Activities based at school:
Illustrated talk on Wembury and the marine life in the rockpools - covers the Seashore Code. This talk can be tailored to any age group and can focus on a specific topic is needed. The talk is designed to be given before a group visits the beach (but could be a stand alone talk if desired).
The session lasts approximately 1 hour including time for questions. £30.
We can also give illustrated talks on other topics, for example the Lyme Bay project that the Devon Wildlife Trust has been involved with for 16 + years.
We will consider other requests for illustrated talks but these will be subject to available staff and volunteer time.
Wembury Marine Centre is popular with our local Plymouth primary schools, we take bookings from January for the upcoming season and can often be fully booked for our guided rockpooling service in the summer term by the school Easter holidays.
