Hello, my name is Matt and along with Bea I am one of the new Marine Awareness Assistants. I have always been interested in the marine environment and from an early age during my holidays I could always be found on the rocky shore turning over stones looking for the biggest crab I could find. Later in my life this passion pushed me towards snorkeling and diving and eventually on to completing a degree in Marine Biology and Coastal Ecology at Plymouth University.

My degree not only enhanced my knowledge and passion for the marine environment but strengthened the realisation of the importance for marine conservation of these environments. After my degree I completed a Masters that involved me working with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (D&S IFCA) looking at the bycatch levels within the Brown Crab and Lobster Potting Industry. This project fed into a fisheries improvement project in order to make the fishery more sustainable for the future and eventually give the fishery the MSC blue tick that you see on sustainable seafood.

Working as The Marine Awareness Assistant at the Wembury Marine Centre is going to be a great summer position, passing on the importance of marine conservation through talking to school children throughout Devon and the surrounding areas and the interactions and education of the public while introducing them to the flora and fauna of the rocky shore.

Being the marine awareness assistant will be great in helping me brush up the species recognition and there is always more to learn. I am really looking forward to taking groups out on our Rockpool rambles and sharing our finds. I’m also looking forward to our snorkel safaris later in the summer.

Anyway, who wouldn’t want to be rockpooling and on the beach all summer!!!

Hi my name is Bea and I am really looking forward to starting my new role as a Marine Awareness Assistant at Devon Wildlife Trust’s Wembury Marine Centre! I have a great love for the sea and the outdoors and have been passionate about wildlife and conservation from a young age.

I have a degree in Zoology from Cardiff University and in the past I have been lucky enough to spend time volunteering and working in marine turtle conservation in Crete and Costa Rica, and with Whale and Dolphin Conservation in Wales and Scotland.  These experiences have been deeply rewarding.  I have also really enjoyed the work I have done in schools and forest schools. The passion and enthusiasm of children inspire me daily!  I am keen to explore the area and help others to get to know the wonderful marine life we have along our beautiful coastline.  I am especially excited about getting out and snorkelling with groups and seeing what Wembury has to offer!
