Are you passionate about inspiring the next generation to protect our marine wildlife? Are you looking for practical experience in environmental education in order to get into the conservation sector? Do you enjoy being outside in all weathers and communicating with a range of audiences? If so, this might be the perfect role for you!

Purpose:
Wembury Marine Conservation Area (MCA) is an area of incredibly varied and special wildlife that is used by many people. From its creation in 1994, the work of Wembury Marine Centre has focused on raising awareness and understanding with visitors and local people, both of the diverse and special wildlife present on the shore, and of how to conserve and care for it now and in the future.
WMC sits at the heart of the MCA and provides the public interface between visitors and the marine environment. WMC receives over 20,000 visitors and works with over 4,000 people each year.

What the task involves:
Marine Awareness Assistants will contribute towards the ongoing success of the WMC Partnership by providing vital support to the members of staff. Once trained, you will lead and organise events and educational activities and help manage the visitor centre, including maintaining the rockpool aquarium. In addition, you may also work on wider projects which will benefit the Marine Centre and Marine Conservation Area.

Skills and Abilities:
We are looking for passion and potential and envisage this would be an excellent opportunity for recent graduates wanting to further their skills to enter the conservation sector, or for more experienced people looking for a change in direction. Those who enjoy communicating with children and people of all ages, as well as those with education experience and/or rocky shore ecology would be ideal for this role. Please note work will take place outdoors, in all weathers and on slippery/rough terrain.

Where:
Wembury Marine Centre, near Plymouth, South Devon

When and how often:
Wembury Marine Centre is open 7 days a week throughout the season and we are looking for a 4 or 5 day/week commitment for 6 months. The role will include some weekend work and occasional evenings.

What’s in it for you?
You will spend your summer in one of the most stunning coastal environments in the UK, enthusing and engaging thousands of people to love and care for their local marine environment.
The role will provide the opportunity to train and learn more about the rocky shore environment, improve your communication and public engagement skills, gain valuable skills in delivering environmental education to school children, meet new people and make new friends.
The experience gained by completing this placement will provide excellent skills for your CV; many of WMC’s volunteers have gone on to gain employment in the conservation sector and in a marine conservation field.

How to apply?
We ask that applicants feel confident they will be able to commit to this role for the full 6 months and be available for interview. Application is by CV and covering letter to DWT Marine Awareness Officer, Cat Andrews.
Please email applications to info@wemburymarinecentre.org or post to Wembury Marine Centre, Church Road, Wembury, Devon, PL9 0HP.
